Carbon Steel 1050








AISI 1050 is a Standard grade Carbon Steel. It is composed of (in weight percentage) 0.48-0.55% Carbon (C), 0.60-0.90% Manganese (Mn), 0.04%(max) Phosphorus (P), 0.05%(max) Sulfur (S), and the base metal Iron (Fe). Other designations of AISI 1050 carbon steel include UNS G10500 and AISI 1050.

1050 (CF) - Strain hardened, stress relieving material typically 100 KSI yield strength.1050 Steel is a plain carbon steel containing 0.50 wt% of carbon.Embrittlement diagram. Temper embrittlement. Treatment: Specimens hardened by heating to 830oC (1525oF) for 30 min and brine quenching. Prior to isothermal embrittlement treatment, all specimens were tempered by induction heating to 650oC (1200oF) for 5 s. Curves are based on transition temperature determined by 50% fibrous fracture. Figures beside points represent the increase in transition temperatures in degrees Fahreinheit from the unembrittled condition.

Having the correct time at austenitizing temperature (e.g., belt speed in a conveyor furnace) is critical to ensure transformation as well. It should be possible to austemper 1050 steel (0.48-0.55%C, 0.60-0.90% Mn) up to a maximum section thickness of 0.125-0.150". Your part at 0.130" thick falls within this range.The Ms (martensite-start temperature) for this steel is approximately 595ºF (315ºC) - note that this is a calculated value. For a complete bainitic transformation, you typically want to hold at 25-50ºF (10-25ºC) above the Ms. Doing so should produce a part within your stated hardness range.
