ASTM A268 TP 410S ASME SA268 TP410S stainless steel is Contains lower carbon than Type 410, offers improved weldability but lower hardenability. Type 410S Stainless Steel is a general purpose corrosion and heat resisting chromium steel recommended for corrosion resisting applications. The low carbon and a small alloy addition minimize austenite formation at high temperature which restricts the ability of 410S to harden. 410S remains soft and ductile even when rapidly cooled from elevated temperature. This helps prevent cracking when the alloy is exposed to high temperature or during welded. 410S is completely ferritic in the annealed condition.
A268 TP410S is not hardenable by heat treatment. It is annealed in the 1600 – 1650°F (871 – 899°C) range and then air cooled, mainly to relieve cold working strains. 410S stainless steel can be easily formed by drawing, spinning, bending and roll forming. This non-hardening characteristic helps prevent cracking when the alloy is exposed to high temperatures or welded. It exhibits adequate corrosion resistance similar to 410 and good oxidation resistance.
A small titanium addition minimizes austenite formation at high temperature, thereby restricting the alloy’s ability to harden. This non-hardening characteristic retards formation of hardening cracks when the steel is welded. 410S is Ferro-magnetic.
Because 410S cools from elevated temperatures without hardening, it is particularly useful for annealing boxes, quenching racks, oxidation resistant partitions and other high-temperature units. It also is used in the petrochemical industry for tower packing and distillation trays. A268 410S is generally considered to be weldable by the common fusion and resistance techniques. Special consideration is required to avoid brittle weld fracture.Type 410S provides adequate resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, mild acids and alkalies, and some other chemicals.

410S Stainless steel resists dry atmosphere, fresh water, mild alkalies and acids, food, steam and hot gases. Must be hardened for maximum heat and corrosion resistance. Performance is best with a smooth surface finish. Less corrosion resistant than the austenitic grades and also less than 17% chromium ferritic alloys such as Grade 430.
410S Stainless Steel Annealing
Full anneal – 815-900°C, slow furnace cool to 600°C and then air cool.
Process Anneal – 650-760°C and air cool.
410S Stainless Steel Hardening
Heat to 925-1010°C, followed by quenching in oil or air. Oil quenching is necessary for heavy sections. Temper, generally within the range 200-400°C, to obtain a wide variety of hardness values and mechanical properties as indicated in the accompanying table.
The tempering range 400-580°C should generally be avoided.
When a weld filler is required, AWS E/ER 309L or 430 filler material is most often specified.
