ASME SA213 TP304L Stainless Steel Tubing and Tubes Properties and Character
ASTM A213 A312 A269 UNS S30403 304L, EN 10216-5 1.4307 stainless steel is (18.0 – 20.0%) chromium + (8.0 – 10.0%) nickel austenitic stainless steel with carbon content maximum 0.035% . TP304L Stainless Steel is a lower carbon,so can be welded without the resulting issue of carbon precipitation precipitation. Because of chromium carbide as heat is applied during the welding process which depletes the chromium element of the steel thus reducing its corrosion resistance / oxidation resistance effectiveness, and because of low carbon percentage (0.035% max), can minimizing IGC Intergranular corrosion attack.
Application of 304L Stainless Steel
TP304L stainless steel tubing is a sort after material for use in severely corrosive environments. Weld annealing is only necessary in applications where stress loads are excessive. 304 & 304L have similar properties and in certain cases are stocked with Dual Certification (304/304L), where it is concluded that each item has properties and a composition which comply with both stainless steel types.
What does the “L” mean of 304L?
L-grades have 0.035% carbon maximum (For 904L it is 0.020% maximum). L-grades are resistant to sensitization in short-term exposures or heat treatments. L-grade often have slightly lower (typically 30MPa less) minimum strengths than standard stainless steel.
Benefits of Using ASTM A213 TP304L Stainless Steel

- Very similar to TP304

One tension test shall be made on a specimen from one tube for lots of not more than 50 tubes. Tension tests shall be made on specimens from two tubes for lots of more than 50 tubes. See ASME SA213 15.2.

- ASME SA213 TP304L Flattening Test—One flattening test shall be made on specimens from each end of one finished tube, not the one used for the flaring test, from each lot. See 15.1.
- ASME SA213 TP304L Flaring Test—One flaring test shall be made on speci- mens from each end of one finished tube, not the one used for the flattening test, from each lot. See 15.1.
- Mechanical property requirements do not apply to tubing smaller than 1⁄8 in. [3.2 mm] in inside diameter or thinner than 0.015 in. [0.4 mm] in thickness.

Permissible Variations from the Specified Wall Thickness
Permissible variations from the specified minimum wall thickness shall be in accordance with Specification A1016/A1016M.
Permissible variations from the specified average wall thickness shall be 10 % of the specified average wall thickness for cold formed tubes and, unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, shall be in accordance with Table 6 for hot formed tubes.
