ASME SA213 TP316H Stainless Steel Tubes Properties and Character
Manufacturing & Microstructure: The tubes are manufactured by the seamless process and are typically supplied in a solution-annealed condition . This results in a pure austenitic microstructure with a very low level of non-metallic inclusions and zero ferrite content, ensuring high material integrity .
High-Temperature Strength & Creep Resistance: The higher carbon content significantly improves the material’s strength at high temperatures. It is engineered for excellent creep resistance, allowing it to maintain its shape and resist deformation under constant stress at elevated temperatures for extended periods .
Corrosion Resistance: As an austenitic grade containing molybdenum, it offers excellent general corrosion resistance. Importantly, it also demonstrates strong resistance against intergranular corrosion .
TP316H Stainless Steel Tubes and Pipes Application
Alloy 316H is most commonly used in petroleum refineries. It is also in Stainless Steel Reheater Tubes and Superheater Tubes for Boiler, heat exchanger tubes, condensers tubes, pipelines, cooling towers, steam exhausts, and electric generation plants. It will also be found in fertilizer and chemical plants.
- Compliance and Standards: The tube is manufactured according to the ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 standard, which covers seamless ferritic and austenitic steel boiler, superheater, and heat-exchanger tubes .
- Core Applications: Its primary applications are as boiler tubes, superheater tubes, reheater tubes, and heat-exchanger tubes .
- Key Industries:
- Power Generation: Used in conventional thermal power plants and has been developed for advanced applications such as internals of sodium-cooled fast reactors .
- Chemical and Petrochemical: Widely employed in chemical processing plants, including LNG plant pipes, for equipment that must withstand aggressive chemicals and high temperatures .
- Other Process Industries: Also used in pharmaceutical, food processing, paper and textile, and marine environments due to its corrosion resistance .
What does the H mean?
H-grades have 0.04 – 0.10% carbon content. H-grades are increased tensile strength and yield strength. H-grade often have slightly Higher (typically 30MPa less) minimum tensile strength and yield strength than standard stainless steel. The “H” in TP316H stands for “High Carbon.” This controlled, higher carbon content is the defining feature that gives this grade its superior performance at elevated temperatures .
ASME SA 213 TP316H ASTM A312 TP316H EN 10216-5 1.4919 Chemical Composition
Chemical Composition (UNS S31609): The carbon content is specified in the range of 0.04–0.10% . This is higher than the 0.08% maximum typically allowed for standard TP316. Other key alloying elements include Chromium (16.0–18.0%), Nickel (10.0–14.0%), and Molybdenum (2.0–3.0%), which provides enhanced corrosion resistance .
