Technical Characteristics of EN 10217-7 1.4404 Stainless Steel Tubes

  1. Standard & Scope:
    • Part of the EN 10217-7 standard, which specifies requirements for welded stainless steel tubes intended for pressure applications.
    • Material designation: 1.4404 (equivalent to 316L, UNS S31603), an austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content.
  2. Material Composition:
    • Low carbon (≤0.03% C) to minimize carbide precipitation and enhance weldability.
    • Alloying elements: 16–18% Cr, 10–14% Ni, 2–3% Mo, with additions of Mn, Si, and controlled P/S levels.
  3. Mechanical Properties:
    • Tensile strength: 490–690 MPa.
    • Yield strength (Rp0.2): ≥200 MPa.
    • Elongation: ≥40% (ensures ductility for forming and welding).
    • Suitable for cryogenic temperatures (down to -196°C) due to retained toughness.
  4. Corrosion Resistance:
    • Superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in chloride-rich environments (e.g., seawater, chemical processing).
    • Performs well in acidic, alkaline, and oxidizing conditions, thanks to molybdenum and chromium content.
  5. Manufacturing & Testing:
    • Welded tubes produced via automated processes (e.g., TIG, plasma arc welding).
    • Non-destructive testing (NDT): Mandatory for weld seams (e.g., eddy current, ultrasonic testing).
    • Pressure testing: Hydrostatic or pneumatic testing to ensure integrity under specified pressures.
    • Surface finish: Smooth, defect-free surfaces required for critical applications (e.g., food/pharma).
  6. Thermal Treatment:
    • Solution annealing at 1010–1120°C followed by rapid quenching to dissolve carbides and restore corrosion resistance.

Applications of EN 10217-7 1.4404 Stainless Steel Tubes

  1. Chemical & Petrochemical Industries:
  2. Oil & Gas:
    • Offshore platforms, subsea pipelines, and components exposed to sour gas (H₂S/CO₂).
  3. Pharmaceutical & Food Processing:
    • Hygienic tubing, CIP/SIP systems, and equipment requiring sterile, non-reactive surfaces.
  4. Marine & Desalination:
    • Seawater handling systems, shipbuilding components, and desalination plant tubing.
  5. Energy & Cryogenics:
    • LNG storage/transportation, cryogenic piping, and nuclear/power plant cooling systems.
  6. Pressure Systems:
    • Boilers, hydraulic lines, and structural parts under high pressure and corrosive conditions.

Key Advantages:

  • Combines low carbon content (prevents intergranular corrosion) with high molybdenum (enhances chloride resistance).
  • Complies with EN 10217-7 for rigorous pressure applications, ensuring safety and durability.
  • Versatile for use in extreme environments (high temperature, cryogenic, corrosive).

Standards Compliance:

  • Aligns with PED 2014/68/EU (Pressure Equipment Directive) for European market applications.
  • Compatible with ASTM A312/A358 (international equivalents).
