305 1.4303 Stainless Steel Pipes and Tubes

AISI 305 UNS S30500 1.4303 stainless steel is comprised of 17% to 19% chromium, 12% carbon, 2% maximum manganese, 10% to 13% nickel with traces of phosphorus sulfur and silicon, with the balance being iron. It was designed for maximum formability, exhibiting good strength and corrosion resistance. Grade 305 has the lowest work and strain hardening rates of all the austenitic stainless steel. This low work hardening rate makes cold working one of the design strengths of 305.

Type 305 Stainless Steel possesses the same excellent corrosion resistance as Type 302, but has a much lower rate of work hardening. It is well suited for cold forming operations in which this low rate of work hardening is desirable. Its yield strengthtensile strength, and hardness increase at rates which are exceptionally low. However, its initially good elongation falls off rapidly.

Type 305 stainless steel is widely used for the production of parts by free spinning and cold heading operations, and it is particularly suitable for severe cold drawing, especially where the part can be completely formed in two draws. In many instances, the intermediate anneal can be eliminated when Type 305 is used. In drawing, the metal should be allowed to slip freely through the hold-down pads, thus holding stretching to a minimum. Used widely for electronic parts and other drawn applications.

ApplicationsAny application requiring maximum formability such as spun or deep drawn eyelets, barrels, shells, cold headed rivets or screws will work well.
MachinabilitySlow speeds and heavy feeds are recommended to combat the material’s tendency to glaze during machining.
WeldingMost of the common fusion and resistance methods can be used here. Filler metal, if necessary, should be AWS E/ER308. Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended.
Hot WorkingForging, heading and other hot working should follow uniform heating to 2100-2300 °F (1149-1260 °C). Rapid cooling is necessary to attain maximum corrosion resistance in finished parts.
Cold WorkingCold work is one of the design strengths of this alloy. It can be drawn, spun, headed and blanked readily due primarily to its low work hardening rate.
Annealing1850-2050 °F (1010-1121 °C) followed by rapid cooling.

This alloy does not respond to heat treatment. Cold work will cause an increase in both hardness and strength.
