303 Stainless Steel
303 1.4305 Stainless Steel is the most machinable of the austenitic stainless steel grades. With the addition of Sulfur to this grade, the sulfur enhances the alloys machinability which is ordinarily difficult to machine. It will resist scaling at temperatures up to 1600 F(871 C).
303 stainless steel provides the best machinability among all the austenitic.
303 gains its improved machining and galling characteristics by the addition on sulphur, however this addition also lowers the stainless steel corrosion resistance and reduces its toughness slightly when comparing it to 304 stainless steel tubing.
303 1.4305 is a sulphur bearing austenitic free machining stainless steel. 303 stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance with improved machineability to the more popular 304 stainless steel grade. As with other austenitic stainless steel grades 303 stainless steel offer excellent toughness though the higher sulphur content reduces the toughness slightly in 303 stainless steel. 303 stainless steel will give good oxidation resistance in occasional service up to 750ºC and in continuous service up to 871ºC (not recommended for 303 grade) The higher sulphure content of 303 stainless steel gives the grade poor weldability and reduced formability compared with other austenitic stainless steel grades.
Characterised by excellent machinablity and non galling properties due to its higher sulphur content, which has the effect of lowering slightly its corrosion resistance. It is however, fairly resistant to general atmospheric corrosion, general foodstuffs, sterilizing solutions, dyestuffs, most organic chemicals, plus some inorganic chemicals. But has very limited resistance to acids.
303 cannot be hardened by thermal treatment, but strength and hardness can be increased substantially by cold working, with susequent reduction in ductility.

303 Stainless Steel Applications
303 stainless steel is widely used in manufacture of hardware, fasteners, shafts, valve bodies, valve trim and food industry applications where 304 stainless steel would be normally used. 303 stainless steel is resistant to atmospheric corrosion, food products, sterilization solutions and many organic chemicals as well as a variety of inorganic chemicals.
