ASTM A519 ASME SA519 1144 Stressproof-equivalent steel
AISI 1144 is a Standard Resulfurized grade Carbon Steel. It is composed of (in weight percentage) 0.40-0.48% Carbon (C), 1.35-1.65% Manganese (Mn), 0.04%(max) Phosphorus (P), 0.24-0.33% Sulfur (S), and the base metal Iron (Fe). Other designations of AISI 1144 carbon steel include UNS G11440 and AISI 1144.
1144 steel is actually pretty cool, at least for steel. It is a higher-strength alloy than 1018 or A36, but in addition has improved ductility as well. The chief feature of 1144 steel, however, is that it has very low distortion or warpage after machining due to a combination of its chemistry, method of manufacture, and heat treatment. Finally, 1144 is relatively easy to machine, with a machinability rating of 83% of AISI 1212 steel.
Stressproof is a trade name of Niagara LaSalle for a modified SAE 1144 steel . The trade name has since taken on a life of its own and 1144 is commonly referred to as “stressproof”. This material is a higher-strength alloy than 1018 or A36, with improved ductility. The chief feature of 1144 steel is that it has very low distortion or warpage after machining due to a combination of its chemistry, method of manufacture, and heat treatment. 1144 is relatively easy to machine, with a machinability rating of 83% of AISI 1212 steel.
STRESSPROOF® is made by a patented process which consists of drawing the bar through a special die under heavy draft, then stress relieving it in a precisely controlled furnace. When Niagara LaSalle developed STRESSPROOF® in 1938, it changed the economics of part production. For the first time, users could get an improved wearability without case hardening, strength without heat treating, plus excellent machinability and tool life. STRESSPROOF® is electro-magnetically tested using eddy currents. Other benefits include resistance to fatigue and stress, balanced working and minimum warpage and distortion. STRESSPROOF® can also be induction hardened, but should be watched for quench cracks.
