Carbon Steel 1010

1010 - General purpose steel. Good weldability and forming and extruding chrematistics. Often used for general structural and automotive bodies. AISI 1010 is a Standard grade Carbon Steel. It is composed of (in weight percentage) 0.08-0.13% Carbon (C), 0.30-0.60% Manganese (Mn), 0.04%(max) Phosphorus (P), 0.05%(max) Sulfur (S), and the base metal Iron (Fe). Other designations of AISI 1010 carbon steel include UNS G10100 and AISI 1010.

Steel is the common name for a large family of iron alloys. Steel can either be cast directly to shape, or into ingots which are reheated and hot worked into a wrought shape by forging, extrusion, rolling, or other processes. Wrought steel are the most common engineering material used, and come in a variety of forms with different finishes and properties. Carbon steel alloying elements do not exceed these limits: 1% carbon, 0.6% copper, 1.65% manganese, 0.4% phosphorus, 0.6% silicon, and 0.05% sulfur.

The typical elastic modulus of carbon steel at room temperature (25°C) ranges from 190 to 210 GPa. The typical density of carbon steel is about 7.85 g/cm3. The typical tensile strength varies between 276 and 1882 MPa. The wide range of ultimate tensile strength is largely due to different heat treatment conditions
.

Sometimes referred to as Shim Stock, Cold Rolled 1010 Steel is oiled to resist rust and stain. Typically utilized in tool and die shops, machine repair and bearing adjustments, Cold Rolled 1010 Steel is rolled to precision tolerances. Cold Rolled 1010 Steel is used in low strength applications. Overall, it has good machinability and can be hardened. It is also suitable for magnet core applications.

Principal Design Features
CS 1010 is a plain carbon steel with a nominal 0.10% carbon content. It is a relatively low strength steel but it may be quenched and tempered for increased strength.

Applications
The low carbon steels, such as 1010, are used for applications such as cold headed fasteners and bolts.

Machinability
Machinability of 1010 steel is fairly good, especially in the cold drawn or cold worked condition. Based upon carbon steel 1112 as a reference that is considered 100% machinable (easily machined) the 1010 steel has a rating of 55%.

Forming
Formability of 1010 steel is good. The alloy has good ductility and is readily formed by conventional means.

Welding
1010 steel may be welded by all of the standard welding techniques.

Heat Treatment
This steel is generally used in the annealed or case hardened condition. It may be heat treated, quenched and tempered but the cost for so doing is generally not worth the result.

Forging
Forging may be done in the range of 2300 F down to 1800 F.

Hot Working
The alloy may be hot worked in the range of 900 F to 200 F.

Cold Working
1010 is easily cold worked by traditional means. Following severe cold working a stress relief, or full, anneal should be performed.

Annealing
A full anneal is done at 1600 to 1800 F followed by slow cooling in the furnace. A stress relief anneal may be done at 1000 F and slow cooled. In the full annealed condition 1010 steel has a tensile strength of about 45 ksi.

Tempering
Tempering may be done, after hardening, at 600 to 1100 F depending upon the strength level desired. Tempering at 1000 F will give a tensile strength on the order of 75 ksi.

Hardening
Hardens by cold working or heat treatment. See "Heat Treatment" and "Tempering".
