ASTM A536 Standard for Ductile Iron
ASTM has five standards refer to ductile Iron. ASTM A536 is the most frequently used, covering the general engineering grades of ductile Iron castings.
The purpose of this standard is providing an standard physical properties data for ductile Iron castings, which will be helpful to the ductile iron casting buyers and manufacturers. The specification for properties can ensure the castings could be used for normal application. The use of standard specifications simplifies the purchase of castings from multiple suppliers because it defines a standard casting whose properties meet the designer's needs, regardless of where, or how the castings were produced.
Specifications should be chosen carefully for the casting application. This is also a reference data, not a compulsive requirements for some application. Meeting the application should be the final standard for the iron castings. Needless restriction to the material will cause the complicated casting processes and increased production costs for iron foundries. The requirements should be best suited to its purpose.
Once the specification has been selected, the foundries must ensure that all castings delivered meet or exceed the specification.
The following mechanical properties are the main content of ASTM A536.
